Dress to Impress: What to Wear to Your Graduate Nursing Interview!

Congratulations on landing a graduate nursing interview! Whether it's online, in person, or a group setting, making a great first impression is crucial. The key is to dress smartly yet comfortably, reflecting your professionalism and personality.

I am not someone who typically would give fashion advice, but this is one of my most asked questions so I figured maybe I need to clear this up once and for all!

So let me guide you through the do's and don'ts of dressing for success, providing examples for men, women, and our amazing non-binary/gender-neutral nurses.

PS: You do you is the crux of this article, EXCEPT from the dreaded S....... more on this below.

Let's get ready to wow the interview panel and show them you're the perfect fit for the job!

Smart Casual: The Perfect Choice

Smart casual is the way to go for your graduate nursing interview. It strikes the right balance between professional and approachable, highlighting your dedication to patient care while showcasing your personality.

Men's Outfit Idea:

  • A crisp, button-down shirt paired with dress pants or khakis.

  • Opt for a tailored blazer for a touch of sophistication.

  • Complete the look with polished dress shoes and a coordinated belt.

Women's Outfit:

  • Choose a blouse or a smart top paired with tailored pants or a knee-length skirt.

  • Layer with a well-fitted blazer for a professional touch.

  • Complement the outfit with closed-toe heels or polished flats.

Non-Binary/ Gender Neutral Nurses:

  • A tailored shirt with dress pants or a skirt works perfectly.

  • Consider adding a vest or cardigan for a stylish twist.

  • Select comfortable, polished shoes to complete the ensemble.

  • Do you in style!

PS: I'm sorry to break it to you, but Scrubs is a No-Go (unless it's a clinical simulation interview!)

As much as you love your scrubs for their comfort and practicality, they are not suitable for your graduate nursing interview. Leave them for your clinical duties! Dressing in smart casual attire demonstrates your dedication to the profession and shows that you take the interview seriously. As well as getting you into interview mode not work mode!

Online Interviews: Dress the Part from the Waist Up

For online interviews, make sure you look presentable from the waist up. You'll be communicating through your appearance and body language, so avoid wearing pajama bottoms or anything too casual. I personally get fully dressed just in case the amazon delivery driver comes to the door and I have to run during the interview 😂

In-Person Interviews: Polish Your Look

When meeting face-to-face, put your best foot forward. Dressing smartly shows respect for the interviewers and the opportunity they've provided, whilst also making you feel good, confident, and smart. First impressions count - stand out in style! Literally!

Group Interviews: Stand Out in Style

Group interviews can be nerve-wracking, but dressing confidently can help you stand out. Opt for understated accessories and keep the focus on your skills and experience. Make sure your outfit is respectful and easy to move around in.

Conclusion

Your graduate nursing interview is a chance to shine and show the world your passion for patient care. Remember, smart casual is your go-to dress code for the big day! For men, women, and non-binary nurses, wearing well-fitted, professional attire will help you exude confidence and competence.

And don't forget, scrubs are for the clinical setting, not the interview room! Leave them behind and dress smartly to make that unforgettable first impression. So go ahead, rock that smart casual look, ace your interview, and let your nursing journey soar!
