How to transition from a “Clinical” to a “Non-clinical” Role.
I have been chatting with lots of clinical bedside nurses lately. Most of them are considering to shift from direct bedside care into the "non clinical" realm. This is a great shift and I love this for them.
Yet, a key theme appears to be a lack of confidence. That is, how your clinical skills are transferrable to a non-clinical setting.
And I hear you.
I had the exact same mind drama and blocks presenting when I applied for my first “non bedside” role. You see, I went from working in a busy, tertiary level ICU to working in a quiet office as an Advanced Life Support Clinical Trainer.
I went from chaos to calm and it was quite challenging in a variety of ways. Mentally, I wasn’t as tired by the end of my working day. Yes I now had nice shifts 8-5pm but I had lost my days off. I didn’t feel equipped to do the job. At that time, I didn’t even have my ALS training certificate, but I still got the job. So I was experiencing immense imposter syndrome. Despite this, I took the leap and committed to exploring non clinical life.
And I know this is where a lot of you are stuck. You are unsure if it is something you want to do and also if it will result in fulfilling work.
Here’s the thing, a shift to a non clinical role is what you make of it. I encourage you to really dive deep into why you are making the shift? And what you are looking to achieve in your work/life in making this move.
Sometimes the grass isn’t greener. But often that is because we bring the “mind drama” from the old job to the new one. And that my friend will always result in internal discord.
If you are considering this shift, I would highly encourage you to listen to my episode on “What's your 'Career Why'?"
In the podcast, we will discuss how we can help you get clear on your first step. And that is to identify why you want to make the shift, ensuring your like your reason for doing so.
Rather than running from something or feeling obliged!
Let me know how you go!
